In this week’s Meet the Members, we chatted (virtually) with Nick Jenkins, our in-house expert on all things ‘The Office’. Yes the TV show with Ricky Gervais. When he’s not talking about The Office, Nick is a freelance Graphic & Motion Designer working with clients in and around Bristol and the Southwest. He’s also one of those super runners who do insane events like the South Downs Ultra, which he’s currently training for. This week, we talk Louis Theroux, Running and of course The Office.
Can you tell us what you do and what an average workday looks like?
Well, I’d say I’m a Graphic Designer first, Motion Designer second and entertainer third. Most days I’m working with other agencies, but I have a few of my own clients that keep me busy as well. I work on a mixture of projects, from conceptual branding to motion led campaigns. I’m currently updating my website and showreel, but as many will know it is constantly put to the back of the queue!
What are you listening to/watching at the moment?
Listening to: Grounded with Louis Theroux, Adam Buxton Podcast, Wernham Blogg and lots of playlists at 170bpm whilst I run, because I’m a sad little man! I’ve re-watched The Office a couple of times during lockdown, which was the inspiration behind my photoshoot for this Meet the Members blog.
What excites you most about the creative process?
Saying yes to things I don’t know how to do is probably the most exciting (and also the most terrifying) thing. Design is hard but I really love how it challenges me and keeps me engaged.
Anything you’re working on at the moment that’s exciting you?
I did a couple of projects with the Enviral guys at the end of 2020, including a big animation which was really fun to work on. These projects were all in the sustainability space and it was great to help create something that’s driving real positive change. Right now, I’m working with a couple of Bristol-based agencies, including the Fiasco crew! I’m also constantly experimenting with After Effects and getting my showreel ready (finally).
Any top design tips or creative advice?
Let yourself make mistakes and don’t compare yourself to others. Also, a good idea is a good idea forever.
What kit/tools can you not live without?
My computer. My running trainers.
Why did you choose Gather Round?
Ironically, because I struggle with working from home. Also, free coffee and the people are alright too! – Thanks for reading. If you’re interested in working with Nick, check out his website or drop him an email: hello@nickjenkins.studio.
